Advocating for Movement Disorder Patients: The Role of Policy

Movement Disorder2

Movement disorders like Ataxia, Parkinson’s, and Huntington’s can significantly impact our daily lives, affecting everything from work to leisure activities.  Recognizing the importance of wise policymaking in supporting these individuals, the Movement Disorder Policy Coalition is dedicated to uniting advocates to inform policies that prioritize access to treatment and patient-centered care.

One critical area of focus is Medicare coverage,

Which many movement disorder patients rely on to access medication.  Advocating for comprehensive and affordable coverage, the coalition supports policies such as Medicare’s six protected classes and out-of-pocket smoothing, ensuring that medications remain accessible throughout the year.

Patient-centered care is another priority, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.  The coalition has pushed for expanded telemedicine capabilities. To ensure continued care while removing access barriers like non-medical switching, step therapy, and prior authorization. Encouraging progress has been made, with states like Louisiana and South Dakota implementing laws to protect patient-centered care.

We also celebrate and encourage innovation.

Recognizing the importance of research and development in improving treatment options.  With advancements in therapies for symptom management, such as stiffness, tremors, and fatigue, patients have more options to maintain their quality of life.

Ultimately, the Movement Disorders Policy Coalition underscores the significant impact of healthcare policies on individuals with movement disorders.  By advocating for policies that prioritize access to care, quality of life, and patient-centered approaches, the coalition strives to improve outcomes. And support those living with movement disorders.
