Unveiling Strength: Sam Blade’s Journey with FA

Sam Blade, a vibrant 25-year-old from Sydney and Melbourne, graciously shares his journey with Friedreich’s Ataxia (FA) in an interview with FARA Ambassador Dragana Obadic. Diagnosed at 15, Sam navigates the complexities of FA with resilience and determination, finding new passions and redefining his purpose along the way.

Despite the challenges posed by FA, Sam remains undeterred in his pursuit of a fulfilling life.

Discovering Wheelchair Fencing in 2018 sparked a newfound passion for sports, leading him to set his sights on representing Australia and the FA community on the international stage.

Beyond his athletic endeavors, Sam embraces daily activities with enthusiasm. From tending to his urban farm and capturing candid moments on film. To engaging in strength training and cardio exercises to maintain his physical well-being.  His commitment to staying active and nurturing his mental health serves as an inspiration to others facing similar challenges.

Reflecting on the positive impact of FA on his life,

Sam highlights how it has instilled in him a deeper understanding of life’s ups and downs.  He encourages those newly diagnosed with FA to keep moving forward, emphasizing the importance of maintaining both physical and mental vitality.

While FA may have influenced some of Sam’s friendships and relationships. He cherishes the bonds that have remained steadfast throughout his journey.  Recognizing the mutual learning experience it has provided. Sam is grateful for the support of those who have stood by him.
