Rising Above: Scott’s Journey with Friedreich’s Ataxia

Scott's Journey with Friedreich’s Ataxia2

At just 23 years old, Scott Armit received the devastating diagnosis of Friedreich’s Ataxia, a genetic neurological disease.  What began with seemingly innocent clumsiness progressed to a point where he was mistaken for being drunk due to his impaired balance and coordination.

The news was crushing.

Scott faced a future without treatment or cure, with the possibility of being confined to a wheelchair.  The physical challenges were daunting, but it was the mental toll that truly tested him.  Depression gripped him tightly, leading him to isolate himself and contemplate drastic measures.

Yet, Scott’s story took a turn for the better, thanks to the unwavering support of his loved ones. With their encouragement, he found the strength to fight back.  Scott embraced physical fitness, enlisting the help of a personal trainer to keep his body strong.  Additionally, he was accepted into a groundbreaking drug trial, reigniting hope for a better tomorrow.

Today, Scott stands as a beacon of resilience and positivity.

He refuses to let his condition define him, instead choosing to embrace life with renewed vigor.  His determination to make a difference has led him to apply to become an ambassador for Ataxia UK, aiming to support others facing similar challenges.

Scott’s journey serves as a testament to the power of perseverance and the importance of support networks in navigating life’s toughest trials.  Though his path may be fraught with obstacles, his unwavering spirit shines brightly, inspiring all who encounter his story.

On behalf of Ataxia and Me and MichaelMantz.com, I would like to thank Scott for sharing his story of the mental health aspect of suffering from a rare condition. Not all symptoms are visible and it’s important to #SpeakUp. I am so happy to see how he has managed to turn his hardships into something so positive for not only himself but the Ataxia community!
